Meet the Learning Guides: Devin
Devin Carberry has been an educator for almost 20 years in a variety of educational settings — from after school to public policy and from classroom teaching to nonprofit leadership — and in schools with a variety of progressive pedagogies — from multiple intelligences to expeditionary learning. His teaching has been featured in both national print and broadcast media, and he was been invited to serve on the Arizona Governor’s Task Force on Education and to write for Rethinking Schools magazine. He has helped launch three schools and two nonprofit organizations. During his career, Devin has developed extensive program development and strategic planning experience, and the ability to build high-performing teams, cultivate partnerships, mentor youth and coach new educators.
What makes Learnlife so unique?
As for what I think is the most important value that we are adding to our youth cohorts lives…
I think about how lost I was at their age. I didn’t know myself, I didn’t have any guidance, and I was angry that I was forced to spend all day somewhere I felt my learning and creativity were stifled and where I was not valued. My life changed when a teacher finally reached out to me and became my mentor. No other teacher before him had seemed to care about me as a person. He radically changed the course of my life for the better. Thus, it makes me reflect on the fact that being a youth is never easy. It’s a confusing time already without the added stress of living in a world in constant and rapid flux that will not look like the world I grew up in. What I think we can offer to youth, is someone who understands them, someone who they can trust, and someone who wants to support their holistic growth and can guide as they work towards understanding themselves and their place in the world.
